Blue Forest

Blue Forest

Based in California, Blue Forest connects the people and science behind restoration work in the West with the money it needs to scale. Its next loan facility, the Western Landscapes Restoration Investment Facility, channels investor capital into restoration projects, and then gets repaid by the utilities and public entities that benefit from healthier land.

Problem:

Wildfire and drought are tightening their grip on the Colorado River Basin. Organizations doing restoration work can't access the financing to do it at scale.

Solution:

The Western Landscapes Restoration Investment Facility offers tailored loans to accelerate restoration across the basin.

$50 million

The Climate Trust

The Climate Trust

Decades of deadwood and overgrowth have left Colorado River Basin forests primed for catastrophic wildfires. The Climate Trust and its Forests for Water Biochar Program turns forest waste into biochar. The carbon credits are then sold to pay for the cleanup, cover program costs, and return funds to investors.

The Climate Trust and its Forests for Water Biochar Program turns forest waste into biochar. The carbon credits are then sold to pay for the cleanup, cover program costs, and return funds to investors.

Problem:

Basin forests are choked with dead wood and overgrowth that fuel severe wildfires, and no business model exists to pay for cleanup at scale.

Solution:

The Forests for Water Biochar Program uses mobile units to convert forest waste into carbon-locking biochar, selling the resulting credits to cover cleanup costs and grow local wildfire-reduction businesses.

$755,400

BlueCommons

BlueCommons

BlueCommons, an Arizona-based nonprofit, partners with Native American Tribes across the Basin to fund water conservation efforts. These are projects that banks wont finance and grants make challenging to manage. BlueCommons revolving fund works with Tribal Nations to design and build nature-based restoration projects.

Problem:

Native American Tribes across the basin have been shut out of capital, leaving vital restoration work undone.

Solution:

Colorado Water Trust

Colorado Water Trust

Every time agricultural land changes hands, the chance to return water to a river can vanish for good. Colorado Water Trust steps into that moment with its Facilitated Ranch and Farm Transfer program, pairing land conservation with its water-transaction expertise. This keeps working farms in operation and puts water back in the river permanently.

Colorado Water Trust steps into that moment with its Facilitated Ranch and Farm Transfer program, pairing land conservation with its water-transaction expertise. This keeps working farms in operation and puts water back in the river permanently.

Problem:

Agricultural lands with senior water rights sell every few weeks, and each sale can permanently close the door on restoring water to a river.

Solution:

The Facilitated Ranch and Farm Transfer program uses a buy-protect-innovate-sell model to keep farms working while committing a share of senior water rights back to the river.

$10 million

Colorado West Land Trust

Colorado West Land Trust

Colorado West Land Trust protects farmland and water resources along the Colorado River using innovative market-based solutions to meet the moment. Capitalizing their Land Action Fund makes it possible to buy farmland at scale and quickly, upgrade it for water efficiency, improve water use and conservation, and then sell it back to farmers with permanent protections and flexibility in place.

Capitalizing their Land Action Fund makes it possible to buy farmland at scale and quickly, upgrade it for water efficiency, improve water use and conservation, and then sell it back to farmers with permanent protections and flexibility in place.

Problem:

Drought, climate change, and development are draining water from farms in the Colorado River Basin. As land and streams dry up, communities face economic and ecological decline.

Solution:

Colorado West Land Trust's Risk to Resilience program keeps the water and land intact through the purchase of irrigated farmland, improving it for water conservation and habitat, and selling it to farmers under conservation agreements that keep water connected to the land. This market-based solution could be implemented in various regions under different conditions at scale, elevating the impact.

Irrigation Incentives

Irrigation Incentives

A Subsidiary of The Freshwater Trust

Irrigation upgrades help solve regional water challenges while keeping farmers farming. Many Western farmers want to convert from flood irrigation to sprinklers or drip but a confluence of factors inhibit action. Over the last few years, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) built a tech-enabled system that prioritizes projects, secures and aggregates fragmented funding, and delivers that money to farmers (through its subsidiary, Irrigation Incentives) at private sector speed without compromising on quality. TFT is replicating the Irrigation Incentives model in watersheds across the West.

Problem:

Farmers are already navigating labor shortages, increasing costs, and declining prices. On top of their day job, it’s often too slow and complicated for them to access needed incentives.

Solution:

Irrigation Incentives operates a streamlined, scalable system that delivers irrigation upgrades to farmers at speed and scale while maximizing regional water results.
